Meet Dr. Cotoman
Dan Cotoman, M.D. is an experienced psychiatrist dedicated to treating the whole patient. Dr. Cotoman is dual board certified in general and forensic psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
Treating patients of all ages, Dr. Cotoman’s provides both psychiatric treatment and psychological counseling. His psychiatric specialties include: Mood Disorders, Learning and Behavioral Disorders, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, and a wide variety of other mental health conditions. He incorporates the mind and body balance to treat his patients, using a combination of medication and therapy with a goal of behavioral modification to serve each patient’s particular needs.
A native of Romania, Dr. Cotoman earned his medical degree from University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Tg.Mures, Romania. Additionally, Dr. Cotoman was a student at the National University of Physical Education and Sport Bucharest, Romania. He served ten years in the military including during the violent Romanian Revolution of 1989, which exposed him to first-hand experience with soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma.
Dr. Cotoman completed his residency in General Psychiatry, and he was the Psychiatry Chief Resident at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There he concentrated on psychotropic medications, and individual and group therapy.
Dr. Cotoman went on to complete a Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University Syracuse, New York. During his training as a forensic psychiatrist and later on as an attending psychiatrist at Central New York Psychiatry Center, NY, Dr. Cotoman was exposed to and worked with some of the most severe forms of psychosis, mood disorder, substance abuse and personality disorders while working in different correctional facilities in New York state with children, adolescents and adults. Dr. Cotoman has provided expert evaluation and witness services in court during his fellowship training and as an attending forensic psychiatrist.
An active member of American Psychiatric Association and American Academy of Psychiatry and Law, Dr. Cotoman serves as a national speaker and has presented several lectures regarding violence in mental illness at different conferences for these organizations and others.
Outside of the office, Dr. Cotoman enjoys spending time with his wife, and their two children. His personal interests are sports, classical music, art and travel.
